You don't ever want to be caught with your pants down! Even if disasters or outages are rare where you live, an ounce of prevention is worth it's weight in gold.

Prepare before a winter storm hits by planning ahead. In areas where winter weather can occur, be sure to create a communication and disaster plan for your family ahead of time. Prepare your home and make sure it is resilient to harsh winter weather and minimally vulnerable to preventable damages and inconveniences for you and your family.

Weatherproof your home.

Weatherization is the preparation of your home against the elements. The elements can enter your home through three forms;

Solids- branches and physical debris penetrating the building. This scenario can make things go south real fast in a disater!

Liquids- From snow, rain or your own pipes!

Air- A cold breeze needs to stay where it belongs.....outside. Prepare properly and you can stay in control of the temperature.

1.) Lets talk water....

Busted pipes can cause a huge mess, damage your home and leave you without essential quality H2O!!!
Insulate any of the water lines that run along exterior walls so your pipes will be less likely to freeze.

When a weather warning is issued:

Make sure you have emergency repair items on hand; Buckets for leaks and drips, PVC pipe, fittings, and glue for emergency leaks.

Fill up the tub and water storage containers you should have on hand for such events with fresh, clean water. The tub can be used for grey water non-potable uses and save the reservoirs (food grade, BPA-free) for potable drinking water.

Have water purification devices on hand as well for an unexpected long-term emergency. Whether filtration, UV, chemical or some other type. Always have two back ups as one system could fail, clog, run out of batteries.

There are low tech ways of emergency water purification as well, it is good to know them. Ways like boiling water, solar uv, charcoal/sand filtration, etc.

Seal air and water pathways:

Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows. Insulate walls, floors and attic with appropriate r-value insulation for your climate.
Install storm or thermal-pane windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside.
Repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on your home or other structure during a storm. Don't plant those large trees near the house in the first place, select smaller, ornamentals for near the house and your life will be much easier. You will not have to worry and you will save a lot of money in tree trimming to keep limbs away from house.
